There are quite a few reasons why you would use slate wall cappings also known as Coping stones generally it is to protect the wall beneath from weather damage but it is also aesthetically pleasing and will last for many years as it is very hard wearing and outlast the concrete ones, so if you don't want to go through the cost of replacing them in 10 to 20 years this would be a sensible idea. They are also used as a base for putting railings on as they are quite easy to drill through and fix securely, sometimes it is to match in with the surrounding area or buildings that have slate or a similar types of finish and you need it to be pleasing to the eye but the main reason is personal choice as there are many other products available  that will do the same job.
