These are what is known as Intumescent products which means that when heated expand and can withstand temperatures up and above 1200 degrees centigrade. Many new  building regulations will insist on the use of products that are passive to normal day use and come into their own in the unfortunate intance  that a fire may break out, as they are designed to stop the spread of flames and dangerous smoke.
